Hammer Complete The Films the Personnel the Company Howard Maxford Books Reviews

  • Just amazing. Can't believe that this is out there. So hard to put down once you start reading. I keep finding myself doing that thing where I'll be reading one entry, which will mention another film so I go look that one up, and in reading that it mentions someone so I go look up their entry, and when I find the page it's on there are 1 or 2 other entries that I know I'll have to read while I'm there........ So eventually I'm miles down the road from where I started and late for work.

I do have two sort, really not complaints, but bear with me. These are not the book or the author's fault. More likely McFarland's

Someone's definition of "Lavish" is very different from mine. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of very nice black and white photos and poster reproduction. But "Lavishly Illustrated?", wouldn't go that far. And as a Hammer fan, I have seen most of these before.

Also should mention that, as I've found in many McFarland book, the page listed in the Index is not always the page what you're looking for is listed on. As an example, the Index said what I was looking up was listed on Page 13. This is a book that is DENSE with text. Each page three rows of tiny lettering. I spent a good half hour reading and reading Page 13, only to find what I was looking for was on Page 14. It's just that the entry it was included in started on 13 and carried over to 14. Again, I've found this in several other McFarland books and it can get annoying.

Yea it's expensive, but it's awesome. I was more than hesitant to buy this but it's 100% worth it. If you have other Hammer Films reference books, don't throw them out. Just be prepared to add this one to the top of the stack.
  • I consider it a special honor to be the first to review this new tome. If you're reading this you are probably a Hammer enthusiast. Praise be and rejoice my friends for this is the one. 904 pages not including the notes, bibliography and index, this appears to be a life's work of author Howard Maxford rather than merely a book. A Bible if you will of all things Hammer. If you will forgive me for offering my readers a little advice. Don't ask yourself if you should spend $95 for this masterpiece; such a question is irrelevant and the price a mere pittance. Instead ask yourself if you can live without it.
  • Massive volume is an encyclopedic reference of all things Hammer. Every film is given exhaustive coverage - creative process, description, filming, release and critical reaction. The perfect companion for the scholarly expert, devoted fan or newcomer embarking on the Hammer experience. Abundant photos and press material are all b&w. Some color would have enhanced the experience. Hardcover monster. No kindle version could ever compare.
